Scripture Focus
“For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.”
— Hebrews 12:6

Reflection

Correction is rarely easy to receive. It bruises our pride, humbles our ego, and often awakens our defences. Yet, though discipline is uncomfortable, God uses it to expose sin, shape our character, and mature us as His sons and daughters.

Think back to childhood—how often did you try to justify your wrong actions with excuses? Even as adults, many of us still defend sinful habits with the same childish arguments. But Scripture is clear:
“Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates reproof is stupid.” (Proverbs 12:1 ESV)

Chastisement is not a sign of God’s rejection—it is evidence of His fatherly love. He disciplines us not to destroy us, but to make us partakers of His holiness. David, though a king, was chastised by God. His correction exposed David’s hidden sins, humbled his pride, and taught him how to live as both a king and priest before the Lord.

When God chastises us, He invites us into introspection. We begin asking:

  • Who am I in the sight of God?
  • Why am I rebelling against Him?
  • What do I risk losing if I refuse to repent?

It is at the seat of godly sorrow and repentance that we discover God’s mercy and grace afresh.

The Purpose of Chastisement

God’s discipline produces transformation:

  1. To yield peaceable fruits of righteousness in our words, actions, and behaviour.
  2. To deliver our hearts from roots of bitterness that defile and trouble us.
  3. To birth true repentance in us.
  4. To restore us into our inheritance in Christ.
  5. To reveal the reconciling love of the Father in our hearts.

A Call for Today

On Day 10 of this fast, let us embrace the Lord’s chastisement with humility and endurance. His rod of correction is a rod of love—meant to shape us, not break us. Let His discipline lead you into deeper holiness and greater intimacy with Him.

Scriptures to Meditate On

  • Hebrews 12:7–13 — Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as His children.
  • Psalm 139:23–24 — “Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”

Prayer

Father Lord, today I yield to Your correction. Do not let my heart reject Your discipline, but teach me to embrace it as an expression of Your love. Search me, O Lord, and purge me of hidden iniquity. Take the reins of my life, so that repentance is continuous in me, and righteousness becomes my testimony. Shape me by Your holiness, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Reflection Question

How do you normally respond to God’s correction—and what step can you take today to embrace His discipline as love instead of resisting it?
