New to following Jesus? This short guide explains important Bible words — like sin, grace, faith, and more — in plain, simple language. It’s a helpful tool to understand the basics of what Christians believe and how to grow in your faith.
Biblical Words made Simple
The all-powerful, loving Creator of everything. In Christianity, God exists as one God in three persons: Father, Son (Jesus), and Holy Spirit.
God’s Son who came to earth as a human. He lived a perfect life, died for our sins, and rose again. Christians believe He is the Savior and Lord of all.
God’s Spirit who lives in believers. He helps, guides, teaches, and strengthens Christians to live for God and grow in faith.
Anything we think, say, or do that goes against God’s will. Sin separates us from God and brings spiritual death — but Jesus came to save us from it.
Being rescued from sin and its consequences (separation from God). It’s a free gift, received by faith in Jesus, not by good works.
God’s free and undeserved kindness. Grace is why we are saved — not because we earn it, but because God loves us.
God not giving us the punishment we deserve. While grace gives us good things we didn’t earn, mercy holds back the punishment we did earn.
Trusting in God — especially in what Jesus did for you through His death and resurrection. Faith is the starting point of the Christian life.
Turning away from sin and choosing to follow Jesus. It means a real change of heart and direction — not just feeling bad, but living differently.
The “Good News” that Jesus died for our sins, was buried, and rose again — so we can be forgiven, made right with God, and have eternal life.
The holy book of Christianity. It has 66 books — the Old Testament (before the birth of Jesus) and the New Testament (about Jesus and the early church). It teaches us who God is and how to live.
Talking with God — about anything, anytime. It includes praise, confession, thanks, and asking for help. God listens and responds.
Giving honour and love to God — through songs, prayer, obedience, and how we live. Worship is more than music; it’s a lifestyle that puts God first.
The community of believers in Jesus — not just a building. Christians gather together to worship, grow in faith, and support each other.
A public symbol of your new life in Jesus. Being baptised (usually in water) shows that you’ve died to your old life and now live for Christ.
A special meal using bread and juice/wine to remember Jesus’ body and blood, given for us. It helps Christians remember His sacrifice.
A follower of Jesus. Being a disciple means learning from Him, obeying His teachings, and helping others know Him too.
Your personal story of how you came to know Jesus and how your life has changed because of Him.
Pure, perfect, and set apart. God is holy — and He calls His people to live holy lives that reflect His character.
The process of becoming more like Jesus. After salvation, God works in you (through the Holy Spirit) to help you grow in love, patience, purity, and other godly traits. It's a lifelong journey of spiritual growth.
Living forever with God. Eternal life begins the moment you believe in Jesus and continues after this life — in heaven, where there’s no more pain, sin, or death.
