Scripture Focus
“For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh:
(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)
Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.”
— 2 Corinthians 10:3–5

Reflection

As children, we are rarely warned of the dangers of strongholds—the unseen fortresses of wrong thinking, misplaced affections, false beliefs, and sinful attitudes that hold our souls captive. Strongholds are not easily broken because they are deeply rooted in the heart and defended by our human will.

A stronghold is “a place where a particular cause or belief is strongly defended or upheld.” In the spiritual life, these strongholds oppose God’s truth and hinder intimacy with Him.

The flesh cannot overcome strongholds—only the Spirit of God can. Scripture teaches that it is the Lord who casts down strongholds (Isaiah 25:12), and it is the Lord who becomes our refuge and defence (Nahum 1:7). Victory comes when His word abides in us, and we abide in Him.

Even Jesus faced the agony of the soul in Gethsemane (Matthew 26:38–39). His prayer life shows us that the more He surrendered in prayer, the more the Spirit strengthened Him, destroying the resistance of His flesh until He could say, “Not my will, but Yours be done.” An angel was sent to strengthen Him (Luke 22:43), just as God strengthens us when we yield.

On Day 11 of this fast, let us be like Jesus. Let us allow God to pull down the strongholds that grieve the Holy Spirit and hinder our walk with Him. Every imagination and thought must be brought into obedience to Christ. Confess your weaknesses before Him, and He will strengthen you at the very point of your need.

Scriptures to Meditate On

  • Isaiah 25:12 — “He will bring down your high fortified walls and lay them low.”
  • Nahum 1:7 — “The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; he knows those who take refuge in him.”
  • Luke 22:43 — “And there appeared to him an angel from heaven, strengthening him.”
  • Psalm 27:14 — “Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!”

Prayer

Father Lord, I confess that apart from You I have no power to overcome the strongholds in my life. Today I surrender my thoughts, my will, and my desires into Your hands. By Your Spirit, cast down every imagination and belief that rises against Your truth. Strengthen me as You strengthened Jesus in Gethsemane. Let my heart find refuge in You, and may my life reflect obedience to Christ alone. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Reflection Question

What strongholds—habits, beliefs, or thought patterns—might God be asking you to surrender today so that He can replace them with His truth?
