Scripture Focus
“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.
But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.”
— James 1:5–6
Reflection
J. I. Packer once wrote: “Wisdom is the power to see, and the inclination to choose, the best and highest goal, together with the surest means of attaining it.”
We live in a world where right and wrong are often blurred by shifting ideologies and cultural norms. Human wisdom contests with God’s kingdom order, and without divine wisdom, it becomes difficult to discern truth from error. To live as sons and daughters of God, serving His purpose on the earth, we must pursue and walk in His wisdom.
Godly wisdom is more than knowledge—it is the right application of truth. Jesus said that the wise man builds his house upon the rock by doing what He teaches (Matthew 7:24–27). It is not what we know, but how we live out that knowledge, that establishes a strong foundation.
In Scripture, wisdom is shown to:
- Enable (1 Kings 5:7)
- Judge (1 Kings 3:16–26)
- Govern (1 Kings 4)
- Discern (1 Kings 3:11)
- Counsel (1 Kings 4:24)
- Partner with wealth and honour (1 Kings 3:13)
- Understand (Proverbs 4:7)
- Supply (1 Kings 4:20)
- Decide and align with God’s will
Five Ways to Pursue Wisdom
- Desire the righteous wisdom of God (Matthew 5:6).
- Ask God, the giver of wisdom (James 1:5; 1 Kings 3:5–10).
- Renew your mind through the Word (Romans 12:2; Matthew 7:24–27).
- Wait upon the Lord for divine instruction.
- Fear the Lord—for the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom (Proverbs 1:7).
Scriptures to Meditate On
- Proverbs 9:10 — “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.”
- Job 12:13 — “To God belong wisdom and power; counsel and understanding are his.”
- 1 Corinthians 1:30 — “Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.”
Prayer
Heavenly Father, You are the source of all wisdom and understanding. Today I ask You to fill me with divine wisdom that I may discern rightly and walk in Your ways. Teach me to build my life upon the rock of Your Word and to live out Your truth in every decision I make. Deliver me from double-mindedness and help me to seek Your counsel above all else. May my words, actions, and thoughts be governed by Your wisdom, for the glory of Your name. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
