What is Mercy and why do we need it?
"God is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness" (Exodus 34:6).
The Word of God tells us that mercy is a characteristic of God and an aspect of his love that will cause him to forgive the guilty (his people who have committed sin and those who iniquity was found in their hearts). God's mercy is seen throughout scripture. There are many occurrences in scripture where law breakers, the needy, the condemned or miserable are seen suffering under a judgement that they could see no way out of. In the same bible, we see aspects of God’s mercy at work, revealed to us through the life of our Lord Jesus Christ ( Matthew 9: 27-31, Luke 17: 11-19).
“But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions- it is by grace you have been saved.” (Ephesians 2:4-5 NIV)
The Strong’s definition of mercy, includes God’s compassion, loving kindness, faithfulness, tenderness, unfailing love and outward manifestation of pity. As God’s people, we daily need to engage God’s mercy, because we all have sinned and transgressed God’s law (Romans 3:23). God is a merciful God and his mercies are new every morning (Lamentations 3:22-23, Micah 6:8)
As you pray these prayer points, engage the mercies of God for both you and your loved ones, so that you will find peace, forgiveness and spiritual health.
Let us pray.
Engaging the mercies of God for personal sins and transgressions
Start your prayer with thanksgiving. (Lamentation 3:22-23, 1 Chronicles 16:34, KJV)
As believers in Christ we must be thankful to God for his enduring mercies, that are renewed every morning for our sakes.
Prayer point: Today, thank the Lord for daily making available to us his everlasting goodness and mercies, in Jesus name.
Confess your personal sins. (Proverbs 28:13, NIV)
It is time to confess your sins. Use the word of God found in (Proverbs 28:13, NIV) as a standing point. As you are confessing your sins, believe that your life will encounter the Lord’s mercies.
Prayer Point: Confess your sins. Ask the Lord to visit every area of your life with his mercies and heal you from all forms of emotional pain and guilt.
Petition the loving kindness of the Lord and ask for cleansing. (Psalm 51:1-2, KJV)
Sin contaminates the soul. It can make your life look filthy in the eyes of the Lord. It is because of the filthiness of sin a sinners life becomes separated from God.. It is God who cleanses us from the guilt of sin .Today, I want you to acknowledge the cleansing power of the Lord’s mercies.
Prayer Point: Ask the Lord to extend his tender mercies towards you and wash you thoroughly from your iniquity and cleanse you from all your personal sins.
Ask the Lord to extend his mercies to your life, so that you will be able to engage his joy. (Psalm 30:5)
There is a deep abiding joy that is revealed in the life of a believer when they come to the knowledge of who God is. There is an assurance found as the Lord’s mercies are extended towards them in the life of Christ Jesus.
Prayer Point: Today, you are going to ask the Lord to mercifully deliver your life from the sorrows of sin, that prevent you from engaging the joy of his Spirit.
Pray for Journey Mercies. (Psalm 121:7-8)
Everyone should pray before they leave their houses. Praying for a safe journey and divine protection when travelling will encourage you to put your trust in the Lord to deliver you from any unforeseen accidents and trials. The Lord has promised in Isaiah 41:10 to never leave us or forsake us. He will be our helper and deliverer.
Prayer Point: Today, declare the blessing of the Lord found in Deuteronomy 28:6 over your life and the lives of your loved ones. Declare that the Lord will be preserve your life as you go out and preserve you as you come back in.
Engaging the mercies of God for generational sins and transgressions (Colossians 2:14-15)
Acknowledge the sins of your bloodline.
Prayer Point: Confess the known and unknown sins and iniquities of your forefathers, who once bowed down and served idols, back to the third and the fourth generation.
Then ask the Lord to extend his mercies upon your bloodline and blot out ( with the blood of Jesus ) any memory of sin that is contending against the salvation of their souls.
Remind the Lord of his word of mercy in Exodus 34:7.
In Exodus 20:5, tells us that he will visit the iniquities of our fathers to the third and fourth generation. Yet, in Exodus 34:7 our merciful Lord promises to ‘Keep mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, clearing the guilty.’
Prayer Point: Ask the Lord to visit your bloodline with his tender mercies and clear your bloodline of the guilt of their sins. List the sins.
Pray that the Lord will deliver your bloodline from the judgement of sin and death. Exodus 18:20 KJV
Remind the Lord of what his word says in Exodus 18:20. His word tells us that he who sins shall die. Scripture also says ‘The son shall not suffer for the iniquity of the father, nor the father suffer for the iniquity of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself.’
Prayer Point: Ask the Lord to deliver your bloodline from the judgement of your forefathers iniquities. No one in your bloodline will suffer the judgement of death, because of the sins of your forefathers.
Engage the delivering power of the Lord’s tender mercies. Jeremiah 31:29-30 ESV
Prayer Point: Pray using the authority in the name Jesus. Intercept any legal judgement seeking you and your family as a result of a generational iniquity. Cancel and overturn every timetable of poverty, sickness, disappointments, accidents, deaths and failures, as you engage the tender mercies of God.
Prayer Point 2: Engage the mercies of God, and silence the voice of any power cursing and oppressing the destinies of anyone in your bloodline. (Isaiah 54:17).
As you pray this prayer point, name the power that is troubling your bloodline: i.e.: Sickness, Poverty or Failure.
Asking for Mercy in Relationships (Luke 6:36)
Prayer point: Lord, let Your mercy heal and restore my relationships with others.
Prayer Point 2: By the mercies of God, I dethrone and dismantle every anti- testimony power that is seeking to influence the minds of God’s people and the communication they have with others.
